Folly for a Film Maker
Hertfordshire, 2005

‘A room of his own’, a folly on a rural estate in London’s Green Belt.

A generous room sits above a stream on a forest of stilts, articulating the Arts and Crafts aspirations of simple living amidst nature with the forms and materials of the local agricultural vernacular.

Hidden from the main house, the folly is approached from behind by a deliberately overgrown path that meanders up through the wooded knoll. Once inside, the room opens up through full width windows to the grove of ash trees and paddock beyond.

Timber shutters, with a state-of-the-art pulley system installed by a professional yacht rigger, allow residents to hideaway or open up to the outside world.
