A demountable building made from recycled materials for athletes to meet and relax at the London 2012 Olympics.

Sitting amidst the high density, concrete clad accommodation of the Athletes’ Village, BioRegional’s One Planet Centre provided a moment of small delight in the Athletes' recreation area.

Part house, part carousel, the centre created a sheltered space for athletes to meet with each other and the BioRegional team, it’s aim to inspire Olympic and Paralympic athletes from around the world to save energy, reduce waste and become environmental champions.

Conceived as a built commitment to One Planet principles, the centre sampled its original surroundings to clad a simple frame made from locally sourced, reclaimed timber. This material camouflage of a strangely familiar form suggests a wealth of associations and actively encourages a genuine understanding of the potential of creative re-use.

Through funding provided by The Legacy List the centre has now been recycled and gifted to the Royal Docks Community School. Here it provides a formal riposte to the neighbouring Excel Centre, providing the school with an outdoor classroom and a memory of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Internally a giant world map wrapped around a pincork clad storage column provided a forum for global pin-trading. A crescent of doors allowed the structure to be a closed room or an open pavilion.

Originally developed by London 2012, and funded by Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) as part of their Inspiring Sustainable Living programme, the One Planet Centre project was managed by UK-based sustainability charity BioRegional, with support from Coca Cola and grant funding from WWF.
