Windlesham Care Home
Surrey, 2016-18

A new dementia care home in Surrey with an innovative care model supporting emotional and physical needs.

We are part of the specialist team lead by care experts Dementia Care Matters appointed to develop specialist interior environments that support their unique operational care model. Prompted by our work on the Wellcome Reading Room the client commissioned us to "curate memories" to ensure residents' emotional needs are supported alongside their physical.

Drawing on extensive research in the field, the project aspires to break with traditional healthcare models that mirror hospital environments by proposing facilities that feel and perform like homes.

The care home provides the full range of care services and nursing support arranged around a cluster of four farm-like buildings that create a family of connected courtyard spaces

Households are formed by 8 people living together with the staff as equal members and interiors can be adapted to meet increasing needs over time as residents' physical and cognitive requirements progress. People are matched according to their care needs, creating a therapeutic environment that enables people, regardless of their condition, to live well.
